A 44-year-old woman, Christina Marie Plante, who disappeared nearly 32 years ago at age 13 in Arizona, revealed to Gila County Sheriff’s Office cold case investigators that she ran away and was not kidnapped, with help from her family. This new information surprised authorities, who had previously believed she was abducted.
Terry Hudgens, a former Gila County sheriff’s deputy involved in her initial disappearance investigation, remarked that he thought the case was resolved, as it stemmed from a custody dispute between her parents. According to him, Plante’s mother helped her leave, and they met while she visited a stable. After that, they traveled to the Phoenix airport, possibly leaving the state or country.
Gila County officials acknowledged the case was not formally closed and are still investigating. Captain Jamie Garrett expressed surprise, suggesting Plante might have run away due to unhappiness with her living situation. Records indicate she lived briefly in Portland, Oregon, but authorities have had no contact since her disappearance.
At the time of her disappearance in 1994, Plante lived with relatives who offered a reward for information about her. Despite being listed in the national missing children database, her case remained cold for many years until recent developments. Plante wishes to maintain her privacy and is now living an adult life, having created a family of her own.
