American Airlines is considering a significant update to its in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi systems for its narrow-body aircraft, with decisions expected soon. The airline is exploring partnerships with SpaceX’s Starlink for Wi-Fi and Amazon for content delivery, such as Amazon Prime and shopping options that allow customers to use miles for purchases. This shift comes as competitors like Delta and United have enhanced their customer offerings, putting pressure on American Airlines to improve.
The airline had previously removed seatback screens to cut costs almost a decade ago, believing passengers would use personal devices for entertainment. However, the rise of rivals investing in modern amenities has prompted discussions about potentially reintroducing screens. American Airlines’ Chief Customer Officer indicated openness to this idea.
Implementing seatback screens is a long and costly process, especially since the airline has a substantial fleet of narrow-body aircraft. Meanwhile, space for free Wi-Fi access is evolving, requiring customers to join loyalty programs.
