L3 Harris is exploring the integration of its Red Wolf missile with the U.S. Air Force’s OA-1K Skyraider II, aiming to enhance the aircraft’s standoff attack capabilities. Originally designed for close air support, the OA-1K could find new roles in high-end conflicts with the addition of the Red Wolf. The U.S. Marine Corps has already utilized Red Wolf to improve its AH-1Z Viper capabilities.
The Sky Warden, based on the Air Tractor AT-802, has been designated OA-1K and will be acquired in a fleet of 75 units for the Air Force Special Operations Command. Red Wolf, alongside its counterpart Green Wolf, is a 250-pound system designed for modular adaptability, with capabilities ranging from munitions to electronic warfare.
L3 Harris is emphasizing agile and customizable configurations for their aircraft, which could operate under austere conditions. The ability to add effects like the Red and Green Wolves enhances the Skyraider II’s standoff weapon delivery potential, crucial for future combat operations, particularly in regions such as the Pacific.
Concerns remain regarding the aircraft’s combat radius of about 200 miles and how well it can survive in contested environments. However, the OA-1K could still provide valuable support in less hostile areas. The demand for standoff munitions like Red Wolf is on the rise, indicating a growing market and potential for cross-service interoperability within the U.S. military and allied forces.
