WorkSafe WA is investigating a hotel involved in a rescue incident concerning the Appelby family, who were swept into the ocean while using kayaks and inflatable paddle boards during their holiday in Quindalup. On Friday, strong winds pushed them offshore, prompting mother Joanne Appelby to make the life-threatening decision to send her 13-year-old son Austin to swim for help after they floated away. He successfully reached shore and alerted emergency services, leading to the rescue of his mother and two siblings, who were found clinging to their gear 14 kilometers offshore.
The Club Wyndham Resort, where the family was staying, denied any wrongdoing, stating that guests are informed of the nearby unpatrolled beach. They are conducting safety reviews to prevent future incidents. Experts emphasize the dangers of ocean conditions and the common misconception that calm waters are safe, warning that offshore winds can carry users far away. They advise beachgoers to prioritize safety and stay aware of local surf conditions.
