Kyiv, Ukraine, is facing severe challenges as thousands of apartment buildings lose heat, electricity, and running water following a recent wave of drone and missile attacks by Russia. President Zelenskiy emphasized the need for timely air defense supplies, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported casualties, including at least one death and four injuries. The assault coincided with trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in the UAE, which Zelenskiy described as “constructive.”
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Russian attacks persist, worsening conditions during the coldest winter since the invasion began nearly four years ago, with temperatures dropping below -10°C (14°F). The city’s centralized heating system has suffered extensive damage, leading to widespread freezing and broken pipes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Klitschko indicated that while efforts are underway to repair the energy infrastructure, a shift toward decentralizing the power grid is necessary but time-consuming. Attacks were also reported in Kharkiv, resulting in over 20 injuries.
