In his inaugural State of the State address, Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson struck an optimistic note, urging lawmakers to act boldly on infrastructure, tax reform, and housing during the upcoming legislative session. He credited the state’s resilience to its people, despite facing significant challenges.
Ferguson acknowledged the severe impacts of December’s historic floods, praising first responders for their bravery. He noted that the state has the courage to confront challenges head-on.
As the 60-day session approaches, he called for investments in infrastructure, tax fairness, and initiatives to tackle the housing crisis, reiterating support for a wealth tax that would benefit Washingtonians directly. He also identified external pressures like the loss of scientific expertise and contentious federal policy changes.
Emphasizing bipartisanship, Ferguson pointed out that nearly half of the bipartisan measures from last year’s session were successful. He highlighted initiatives designed to enhance public safety, ensure compliance with environmental promises, and protect children.
Throughout his address, he urged collaboration, stating, “Let’s go back to basics to continue to grow.” He concluded by calling on Congress to inspire future generations, asserting that Washingtonians are proactive in shaping their destiny.
