A group of eccentric athletes participated in the “Fare Evasion Olympics” at Manhattan’s Broadway-Lafayette Street Station to highlight the ineffectiveness of the MTA’s new subway turnstiles. Featuring a diverse lineup, including a pole dancer, rock climber, and parkour enthusiast, the event aimed to prove that the tall paneled doors are costly and inefficient. Organizer Danny Fisher expressed his disdain for the fare system, referencing a recent incident that injured a child.
Participants, including one dressed as a bunny, showcased their skills by leaping over the turnstiles with little intervention from MTA employees. The winner, a rock climber named Josh, emphasized the waste of funds on such barriers instead of improving transit services. Fisher plans to incorporate the event into his upcoming show, “The Danny Fisher Show,” set to premiere in February, with a broadcast of the Olympics planned for March. He hopes the event raises awareness about the challenges posed by the new turnstiles.
