Ukraine is intensifying its use of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to strike Russian targets along the Dnipro River. The current phase of these operations follows successful previous attacks on enemy ships and infrastructure, facilitated by Ukraine’s State Security Service and Defense Intelligence Directorate.
A notable recent action involved the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade, which showcased its Barracuda USV in video footage demonstrating a successful strike against a Russian camouflage ship. The Barracuda, designed by the brigade’s special forces unit, serves multiple tactical roles, including offensive strikes and logistical support.
Despite its capabilities, the Barracuda lacks satellite communication, limiting its operational range to short distances, primarily around the Dnipro region. It can autonomously navigate but poses challenges for precise attacks in complex waterways.
In parallel, Russia is developing its own USV capabilities and has recently attacked a Ukrainian reconnaissance vessel. Ukraine has preemptively targeted Russian USV storage sites to thwart potential deployments. This ongoing maritime conflict reflects a broader struggle for control in the region since Ukraine regained Kherson in November 2023.
Overall, the introduction of the Barracuda signifies Ukraine’s efforts to enhance its defense capabilities in a challenging operational environment, even as it faces the possibility of future Russian USV attacks.
