Larian Studios, known for Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin, recently stirred mixed feelings among fans after announcing their upcoming RPG, Divinity, and revealing their use of generative AI for certain tasks. Co-founder Swen Vincke clarified that AI is employed for administrative tasks like enhancing presentations and generating placeholder text, but all final content will be created by human artists and writers.
Vincke reassured fans that Larian is actively expanding its team of artists and writers, emphasizing that AI serves as a tool to assist creatives—not replace them. He highlighted that they use AI for research and drafting in the early stages, but original artwork and narratives come from human talent.
He further explained that their primary uses of AI include automating mundane tasks, improving iterative design processes, and potentially exploring new gameplay mechanics in the future. Nonetheless, Larian is committed to maintaining its artistic integrity, focusing on human creativity rather than leaning on machine-generated content. The reaction to this approach remains mixed among fans, leading to ongoing discussions about the balance between AI and human creativity in game development.
