The UK Government has introduced the branding for Great British Railway (GBR) as part of its plan to nationalize the railways, a promise made in the Labour manifesto. This initiative follows the public control return of three passenger rail franchises last year. The new GBR branding features a red, white, and blue color scheme reflecting the Union flag and will be implemented on trains, stations, websites, and apps starting next spring.
Plans in the Budget include freezing regulated rail fares next year, although lower fares under renationalization are not guaranteed. The railway bill necessary for establishing GBR is currently progressing through the House of Representatives. GBR aims to consolidate 17 organizations to reduce bureaucracy and improve accountability.
The initiative will also introduce a customer-friendly app for checking train times and booking without fees, including services for passengers with disabilities. Several rail companies have already been nationalized, with plans for more in 2026. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that this new branding represents a commitment to improving the passenger experience. Industry leaders, like Jacqueline Starr of the Rail Delivery Group, expressed support for the transition to GBR.
