A new feature on Elon Musk’s platform, X, allowed users to see the country of origin for accounts by clicking on the join date in the “About this account” section. This feature showed users where accounts were posting from based on their IP address, rather than self-reported location. Shortly after its rollout, the feature was removed without explanation, possibly due to inaccurate information; for instance, some users reported incorrect countries due to VPN usage. Nikita Via, X’s head of product, had previously demonstrated this feature before it went live. Bier, a company representative, indicated that the inaccuracies were being addressed and that the feature might return soon. Users had largely welcomed the feature, viewing it as a way to combat misinformation on the platform. Similar functionalities exist on Facebook, though differently configured.
