A new report from the UK Health and Safety Agency (UKHSA) highlights concerns about climate change contributing to mental health issues among young Britons, leading some to feel guilty about having children. The report defines “environmental anxiety” as distress stemming from climate threats, while “solastalgia” refers to sadness over the deterioration of familiar environments.
The data reveals that nearly 40% of young respondents hesitate to have children due to fears about their future quality of life. To combat this anxiety, the report suggests community activities like yoga and “climate cafes” as potential coping mechanisms.
Critics, including Jason Isaac from the American Energy Association, argue that such concepts stem from climate change propaganda and are not legitimate medical conditions. Bill Gates has also stated that climate change won’t lead to humanity’s extinction, further fueling the debate. Despite the criticism, UKHSA emphasizes that addressing climate-related psychological impacts is crucial for public health.
