Paul Skeens and Tarik Skubal, two of baseball’s top pitchers, recently won the Cy Young Awards, with Skeens taking home the award for the National League and Skubal winning it for the American League for the second consecutive year. Skeens, 23, made headlines as the first pitcher since Dwight Gooden to win Rookie of the Year and then the Cy Young in back-to-back seasons. He expressed optimism for his team, the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates, stating that he wants to change perceptions about their potential for success.
Skeens finished the season with a 10-10 record and a stellar ERA of 1.97, leading the league in strikeouts. Despite the Pirates’ last-place finish, he believes they are closer to championship contention than many think. Skubal, now 28, anchored the Detroit Tigers and led them to playoff appearances in recent years, but shared his disappointment regarding their inability to win a championship.
Skubal commented on his desire to continue thriving with the Tigers but is also aware of the business aspect that could force a trade as he becomes a free agent. His impressive stats included a 2.21 ERA and 240 strikeouts during the regular season.
Both pitchers participated in this year’s All-Star Game and have aspirations for greater team success beyond individual accolades.
