Amazon is integrating Whole Foods employees into its workforce as part of Project Cremini, aiming to merge over 100,000 Whole Foods employees into Amazon’s core operations by next year. This transition includes using Amazon’s systems for performance reviews, payroll, and workplace tools, reflecting Amazon’s efforts to streamline its grocery operations and enhance Whole Foods’ growth following its acquisition in 2017.
The integration is led by Jason Buchel, the new CEO of Whole Foods and vice president of Amazon’s grocery division, who advocates for a “uniform employee experience” while reducing bureaucracy. The consolidation of vendor management teams aims to boost efficiency and is projected to generate at least $94 million in additional profits.
Additionally, Amazon launched a project called Fusion to enhance grocery delivery from both Whole Foods and fresh produce sources. Concerns have existed among Whole Foods employees about losing the brand’s identity, but Buchel encourages a united “one grocery mindset.”
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasizes the transforming trajectory of its grocery business, noting significant growth in online grocery shopping and changing consumer behaviors. Overall, the integration and strategic changes aim to enhance efficiency and the shopping experience for customers.
