Jin noted that Zuckerberg’s panic following OpenAI’s ChatGPT success led to impatience with LeCun’s long-term AI research strategy, which clashed with Meta’s new focus on rapid product development.
LeCun, historically skeptical about large language models (LLMs) for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), now reports to Wang, who leads Meta’s “superintelligence” division. This change reflects Zuckerberg’s shift from foundational research to aggressive competition with Google and OpenAI. Wang touted Meta’s AI growth metrics, despite concerns from investors about the company potentially falling behind in AI investments compared to competitors like Google and Microsoft.
Meta’s stock declined slightly following these developments. Jin drew parallels with Google’s re-hiring of AI pioneer Noam Shazeer, suggesting a similar potential future move by Zuckerberg.
