Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced a temporary youth curfew following a disturbance involving a group of teenagers at Navy Yard on Friday night. The curfew, effective November 1 until November 5, requires youths under 18 to be accompanied by an adult between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, Police Chief Pamela Smith can implement a “special youth curfew zone” starting at 6 p.m. in designated areas, including the Navy Yard and U Street Corridor.
This decision comes after five teenagers were arrested during the brawl, involving incidents like possession of prohibited weapons and resisting arrest. The police noticed large gatherings of juveniles in the park, which escalated into a fight, prompting temporary road closures and an increased police presence.
Bowser has expressed a desire for a permanent curfew due to ongoing issues with large groups of disruptive youth. Authorities are urging parents to monitor their children’s whereabouts, especially those from neighboring Maryland and Virginia. This situation is still developing.
