Sudanese militias, particularly the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have seized key military bases in El Fasher, the last stronghold of Sudanese forces in Darfur, amid escalating violence that has resulted in numerous civilian casualties and significant destruction of medical infrastructure. Reports indicate that fighting has intensified, with civilians trapped and hundreds displaced due to the ongoing conflict.
Since April 2023, tensions between military and paramilitary forces have surged. Footage has emerged showing RSF fighters celebrating their advances, while reports of attacks on civilians, looting of hospitals, and arbitrary detentions have surfaced. The Sudan Doctors Network has condemned the violence as a “heinous massacre,” highlighting the dire situation for those remaining in El Fasher, where conditions are deteriorating rapidly.
UN officials have expressed alarm over the humanitarian crisis, stressing the urgent need for safe access to aid for the trapped population. The conflict has already claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced millions, exacerbating a humanitarian catastrophe in the region, with ongoing investigations into potential war crimes and human rights abuses linked to the RSF’s actions.
