Nassim al-Radi, a 33-year-old civil servant from Beit Rahiya, was released from Israeli custody after 22 months of detention, during which he faced severe abuse. Arrested on December 9, 2023, he and others were subjected to torture, medical neglect, and starvation, with many never charged with a crime. Upon release, Ruddy recounted being beaten, living in overcrowded conditions, and suffering from various health issues, including serious vision problems due to abuse.
Alongside him, Mohamed al-Asaliya, a 22-year-old student, detailed inhumane conditions, including contracting scabies and enduring psychological torture through loud music and physical restraints. Both men lost significant weight during their imprisonment.
Palestinian officials noted visible signs of abuse among the released detainees, many of whom required emergency medical attention. Approximately 2,800 Palestinians from Gaza are currently held without charge in Israeli facilities. Recent changes to Israeli law have facilitated mass incarcerations, raising concerns about a marked decline in treatment standards and increased reports of torture since October 7, 2023.
Ruddy expressed sorrow upon learning of the deaths of his wife and most of his children during his detention, linking his release to personal tragedy rather than celebration. This situation reflects ongoing tensions in the region and raises human rights concerns regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees.
