Five vacant homes on North Carolina’s Outer Banks collapsed into the ocean due to the effects of Hurricanes Hambelt and Imelda. The incident occurred on September 30, 2025, in Buxton, where a house supported by stilts was filmed succumbing to the waves. No injuries were reported, but the Hatteras National Coast urged visitors to stay clear of the area due to dangerous debris.
This collapse marked the second occurrence within six weeks of severe ocean conditions caused by hurricanes, after similar incidents in August. The Outer Banks have faced significant erosion, with 17 homes collapsing since 2020, primarily affecting coastal properties built on low-lying barrier islands, which are inherently vulnerable to storms.
Warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for coastal flooding and hazardous wave conditions for the rest of the week, leading to road closures and ferry suspensions on Ocracoke Island. The storms are expected to continue affecting the U.S. East Coast.
