Israeli forces have conducted what they describe as “the most powerful strike” in Yemen, targeting Houthi positions in the capital, Sanaa. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that dozens of aircraft bombed sites associated with the Houthi security and intelligence agency, resulting in civilian casualties, including eight deaths and 142 injuries, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.
This military action follows recent Houthi drone and missile attacks against Israel, which intensified after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. The Houthis claimed these attacks were in support of the Palestinians. In response, Israel has launched extensive airstrikes in Yemen, targeting Houthi military infrastructure and operations.
The IDF stated its commitment to countering the Houthi threats and indicated that additional operations were forthcoming. Despite intercepting a majority of attacks aimed at Israel, one recent drone launched from Yemen had breached defenses before causing injuries in Eilat. The Houthi leadership called these retaliatory actions a response to Israeli aggression in Gaza.
Following the strikes, significant damage was reported in Sanaa, with images showing destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure. The situation highlights the increasing complexity of regional conflicts, with civilian impacts experienced on both sides.
