The New York Liberty has parted ways with head coach Sandy Brondello just one season after winning the WNBA Championship. The franchise announced it would not renew her contract following a disappointing playoff performance. Brondello, who became the team’s most-winning coach since joining in 2022, led the Liberty to back-to-back WNBA Finals, winning the title in 2023.
Despite a strong start to the 2025 season, the team struggled with injuries and inconsistent performance, leading to a first-round playoff exit. Brondello expressed disappointment over the team’s efforts this season. Players like Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart supported her leadership, describing her management as “incredible” given their challenges.
Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb acknowledged Brondello’s significant impact, while noting the coaching changes occurring in the league, including the Seattle Storm’s decision to not renew Noel Quinn’s contract.
