Texas school districts Connally, Lake Worth, Beaumont, Wichita Falls, and Fort Worth face potential state intervention after receiving poor performance ratings, marking a historical five consecutive failing grades for some campuses. TEA Commissioner Mike Moras has yet to decide on actions regarding these districts, which could include replacing elected school boards or closing low-performing schools.
The recent ratings stem from a three-year assessment released earlier this year, following a court ruling that allowed the state to disclose these ratings. Connally and Lake Worth schools have reached the threshold for sanctions, while Wichita Falls ISD has already closed a struggling middle school. Fort Worth ISD is appealing a low rating after closing one of its programs but may still face state action.
Beaumont ISD has previously undergone state intervention due to financial issues, regaining control in 2020. Meanwhile, Texas has recently taken over Houston ISD, where management changes have led to improved test scores but declining enrollment and staff layoffs.
