Former Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen resigned earlier this year under mysterious circumstances, linked to a lawsuit involving singer-songwriter Jewel. McMullen’s lawyers sought to shield him from questions about his resignation in a court case, asserting it had no relation to Jewel’s lawsuit against Kroger, which involves allegations of breach of partnership in hosting a wellness festival.
Kroger’s SEC filings revealed that McMullen forfeited $11.2 million in bonuses upon his resignation, which the company attributed to an “investigation into his personal behavior” that contradicted company ethics. A judge ruled that McMullen must clarify the reasons for his departure and who was involved, despite his claims that the questions are irrelevant and embarrassing.
Jewel’s lawsuit alleges that Kroger improperly terminated their partnership regarding the wellness festival and seeks damages exceeding $7 million. Kroger has moved to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that no legal agreement existed.
