At the World Aquatics Championships, Canada’s Summer MacIntosh won the 400m freestyle, marking her first head-to-head with American star Katie Ledecky. At just 18, MacIntosh, who aims to secure five individual golds, finished in 3:56.26, defeating China’s Li Bingy by nearly two seconds. This victory follows MacIntosh’s recent world record of 3:54.18.
Ledecky, competing for her 27th career world championship medal, expressed disappointment at her performance, noting her awareness of MacIntosh as a formidable competitor. MacIntosh also has four events remaining: the 200m and 400m individual medleys, 200m butterfly, and 800m freestyle.
In team events, Australia triumphed in the 4x100m freestyle relays, overtaking American teams in the final stages. Notably, swimmer Olivia Unsch helped secure victory for Australia after the US faced illness-related challenges during their training.
Meanwhile, Lucas Martens of Germany claimed the men’s 400m freestyle final at 3:42.25, continuing his strong performance after setting a world record earlier. The championships run until August 3, with key events featuring MacIntosh and other top swimmers broadcast live on Peacock.
