Israeli forces intercepted a boat named Handala, attempting to break the maritime blockade of Gaza on Saturday night, towing it to Ashdod Port. The vessel, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, carried pro-Palestinian activists and limited humanitarian supplies. It had departed from Sicily and was intercepted about 100 km west of Gaza.
Handala’s crew included 19 activists and two Al Jazeera journalists, who broadcast their situation live while singing the Italian anti-fascist song “Bella Ciao.” The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all passengers were safe and indicated that the interception was necessary to maintain maritime security.
The activists planned to protest by going on a hunger strike, rejecting any aid from Israel. French lawmakers aboard the boat were detained, prompting outrage from their party leader, who criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Israel has previously blocked similar attempts to reach Gaza, asserting the blockade is vital for security against Hamas. The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with recent reports of malnutrition-related deaths. While Israel claims there is no widespread hunger, ongoing military actions and blockades continue to spark international concern and criticism.
