Bengals Training Camp Summary
As training camp kicks off, several key positional battles are worth watching for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Right Guard Battle:
Lucas Patrick and Cody Ford are competing for the starting right guard position. Ford started camp with first-team reps, while Patrick filled in as a backup center for an injured teammate. Although Patrick lacks an impressive resume, he’s considered a solid pass blocker. The competition is open, with other players like Cordell Volson and potential rookies Jalen Rivers and Seth McLaughlin also in the mix.
Starting Cornerback Race:
Dax Hill, Cam Taylor-Britt, and DJ Turner are vying for a cornerback spot. Hill, who faced injuries last year, seems to be settling into his role. Taylor-Britt has gained confidence in his play, while Turner stands out with speed and technical skill, particularly in man coverage. All three are expected to play significant roles.
Fifth Linebacker Position:
Maema Njongmeta, Shaka Hayward, and Joe Giles-Harris are eyeing the fifth linebacker spot. Njongmeta, a fan favorite, showed promise last season and must prove himself again this year. The team has brought in four new linebackers, indicating strong competition.
Backup Running Back:
The battle for RB2 features Samaje Perine and rookie Tahj Brooks. The team is looking for a reliable option to support Chase Brown. While Brooks has potential, Perine may be favored until Brooks proves himself.
Long Snapper:
Caladmitis and William Wagner are competing for the long snapper position, following a challenging season for kicker Evan McPherson, attributed partly to snapping issues.
Tight End Depth:
Cam Grandy, Tanner McLachlin, Tanner Hudson, and possibly Noah Fant are contending for the third and fourth tight end roles. With Mike Gesicki and Drew Sample expected to lead, the team may keep four tight ends to bolster skills in both blocking and receiving.
Defensive Line Updates:
Cedric Johnson is benefiting from the absence of Shemar Stewart and Trey Hendrickson, providing him an opportunity to secure a spot on the final roster.
Overall, a mix of established players and rookies will make for an exciting training camp as the Bengals aim to solidify their roster.
