The Israeli military is investigating reports of civilian casualties near a Gaza aid distribution center operated by the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). This operation began in late May, during which numerous casualties were reported by the Hamas-run Health Ministry and observers. The UN reported over 400 Palestinians have died while seeking assistance.
Following these events, the Israeli military stated they issued new instructions to troops but did not provide details on what was learned. Although the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed they fired “warning shots” at individuals approaching military areas, several Israeli media sources confirmed that some Palestinians were indeed killed in these incidents. The IDF acknowledged that some of its fire was “inaccurate” and caused civilian casualties.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected allegations of deliberate fire against unarmed civilians as “malicious falsehoods.” The GHF has faced criticism from UN agencies, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres labeling it as “inherently unsafe,” aiming to bypass the UN in aid distribution to prevent Hamas from diverting resources.
Despite the ongoing issues, the US State Department recently announced a $30 million contribution to the GHF. Israel has partially lifted restrictions in Gaza due to international pressure, even as violence continues. Since October 7, 2023, over 56,500 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in Gaza amid the IDF’s military campaign launched in response to Hamas attacks, which have also resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken. The IDF plans to reorganize access to the aid sites and has decided to relocate the current distribution center.
