The Public Building Reform Committee recommends selling the complex due to ongoing financial burdens. Historian Jim Hoobler emphasizes the building’s heritage and architectural significance, pointing out its role in hosting notable trials, including the infamous Jimmy Hoffa trial.
Despite its historic designation, the building is not protected from demolition by private developers. Hoobler advocates for its preservation, suggesting adaptive reuse into residential spaces, which could save significant greenhouse gas emissions. The sale would also necessitate relocating federal agencies currently occupying the site, potentially saving the government from a costly $295 million maintenance bill.
