The Metropolitan Police Chief, Commissioner Mark Lowry, expressed being “shocked and frustrated” by planned protests in London supporting Palestinian actions. He emphasized that while the right to protest is vital, support for groups labeled as organized extremist criminal organizations goes beyond acceptable protest. A government statement indicates a ban on these groups, viewed as terrorist organizations.
Prior protests saw Palestinian activists vandalizing military equipment in Oxfordshire, which prompted counterterrorism police investigations. The upcoming protests are backed by 35 groups, including The Stop the War Coalition and MEND, and will take place between 12:00 and 15:00 in Trafalgar Square, without entering an exclusion zone in Westminster.
Critics, including group member Saeed Taji Farouky, called the intended ban “absurd” and a threat to democracy, linking their actions to the current Gaza conflict. Opinions are divided, with some supporting the ban and others, like Amnesty International and Baroness Shakrabarti, warning against using counter-terrorism measures to limit protests.
Regular protests in London have occurred since Israel’s military campaign began after October 7, 2023, with significant casualties reported in Gaza, heightening tensions around the demonstrations.
