AFLAC, a major insurance provider, disclosed a recent cyberattack that could compromise Social Security numbers and health information. This incident is part of a broader series of attacks impacting the insurance sector, which has also affected Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance Companies. All three hacks are linked to a cybercriminal group called the “scattered spiders,” known for their sophisticated methods, including social engineering techniques to gain access.
AFLAC noted that while they contained the breach quickly, the full extent of the stolen information is still unclear. Unlike some ransomware incidents, AFLAC stated that no ransom has been deployed and their customer services remain operational.
The scattered spiders have gained notoriety for their rapid and aggressive attacks on various industries, prompting cybersecurity experts to warn companies to be vigilant against potential infiltrations. The group, consisting mainly of young individuals from the US and UK, has been linked to significant recent hacks, emphasizing the need for businesses to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
