Authorities have announced the recall of several cold treatment swabs due to concerns about possible fungal contamination that could lead to severe infections. The FDA has advised consumers to stop using Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs, and Orajel Baby Teething Swabs, citing potential microbial contamination. Vulnerable populations, including those with immune system issues, are at heightened risk for life-threatening infections, which could also travel to the brain.
Affected products include specific lot numbers, and the FDA recommends consumers discard them and seek refunds. While no illnesses have been reported yet, the swabs may introduce fungal pathogens into the bloodstream through nasal use. Symptoms of such infections can include fever and chills, potentially leading to severe complications or death.
The FDA confirmed that other Zicam and Orajel products remain safe for use. The recall highlights the risk posed by contaminated medical products, with Candida being the most common fungus responsible for bloodstream infections in the U.S.
