Wonder Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, gave his first speech in court during a sexual abuse trial in the Dominican Republic, where he faces serious charges including sexual abuse and exploitation of minors. Prosecutors claim there is “convincing evidence” against him, alleging he attempted to bribe the victim’s mother. The trial is set for June 2, 2025, in Puerto Plata.
Franco has continually asserted his innocence since the allegations surfaced in August 2023, expressing a desire for justice and thanking the judge for the opportunity to speak in court. Prosecutors argue that the abuse lasted eight months and involved payments to the mother to silence her.
His defense contends that the prosecution lacks evidence and that the charges are flawed. If convicted, Franco could face up to 20 years in prison. Unlike the U.S., the trial in the Dominican Republic will be overseen by a panel of three judges. Franco’s case brings to light serious allegations of human trafficking and minor exploitation, with the victim’s mother also facing charges related to money laundering.
