On Saturday, Kyiv experienced significant Russian drone and missile attacks, resulting in explosions and machine gun fire, prompting evacuations in metro stations. This assault occurred shortly after a major prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, involving 1,000 soldiers and civilians.
Explosions were reported in multiple urban districts, leading to at least six injuries and fires in the Solomiansky district. Residents described the chaotic scene, with air raid sirens and the sounds of drone activity preceding the explosions. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko warned of over 20 incoming Russian drones, and parts of the drones struck a shopping mall and residential buildings.
This weekend’s exchange marked the largest of its kind during the ongoing conflict, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announcing the return of 390 Ukrainians. Despite these diplomatic exchanges, combat continues, and the front lines remain active with high casualties reported. Russian officials indicate a forthcoming peace proposal, but critical conditions remain unresolved, complicating efforts for a lasting ceasefire.
The ongoing situation highlights the disconnect between military action and diplomatic negotiations amid continued hostilities.
