Authorities have identified 25-year-old Edward Bartos as the suspect in a fatal car explosion targeting an infertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. The FBI reported that Bartos appears to be the only fatality, as he attempted to detonate an explosive device outside the American Reproductive Center (ARC) while live streaming the attack. The explosion occurred shortly before 11:00 AM local time, damaging several structures, including the clinic, but fortunately, no patients were present at the time.
The FBI labeled the incident as a “deliberate act of terrorism,” noting Bartos’s intent to target the in vitro fertilization facility. A massive improvised explosive device was used in the attack, leading to injuries for four individuals, all of whom have since been released from the hospital.
Bartos, a resident of Twentynine Palms near a Marine Corps base, prompted an investigation that included a search of his home and temporary evacuations of nearby residents. The FBI is soliciting public assistance to reconstruct Bartos’s movements leading up to the explosion, which was described as one of the largest bombing scenes in Southern California recently. The clinic confirmed that all stored eggs and embryos remain safe and intact despite the damage.
