Microsoft has announced that starting June 1, 2025, the Microsoft Authenticator app will no longer allow users to store new passwords as the company shifts focus from app-based password management to browser-based solutions. This change will be followed by the removal of Autofill in apps by July and the eventual inaccessibility of previously stored passwords by August. While PassKey support will continue, Microsoft emphasizes using the Edge browser for password management, syncing securely with user accounts.
Historically, the Microsoft Authenticator app was primarily a two-factor authentication tool rather than a full-fledged password manager. Critics note that both the Authenticator and browser-based password vaults lack the comprehensive features of dedicated password managers, which not only autofill credentials but also generate 2FA codes.
For users seeking alternatives, Apple’s iCloud Keychain or dedicated options like 1Password are recommended for managing passwords across devices and platforms.
