The latest feature in Season 2 of Marvel Rivals allows players to customize their character costumes by changing color palettes, targeting fashion enthusiasts. However, this customization is not free and applies to limited skins, with a $6 fee to alter each existing costume. While this price is considered reasonable compared to competitors like Overwatch 2, the introduction of a new currency called "unstable molecules" adds complexity to the game’s existing microtransaction system.
Currently, the game has three main currencies: Chrono Tokens, used to unlock Battle Pass rewards; Units and Lattices, the premium currencies for purchasing costumes and other items. To customize skins, players must now convert Lattices into unstable molecules, with this currency complicating the purchasing process further. The overall result is a more opaque and potentially confusing experience for players, as multiple currencies can obscure real monetary costs.
Currently, four skins have been introduced for customization: Magik Punkchild, Psylocke Vengeance, Luna Snow Mirae 2099, and Winter Soldier Blood Soldier. Customizations cost 600 unstable molecules each, available through the in-game store. While stable molecules can initially only be obtained by converting existing currencies, there are plans to introduce alternative methods in Season 3. Overall, players may feel that the addition of another currency is unnecessary and adds to the growing complexity of microtransactions in Marvel Rivals.
